Restaurant Review: SabX2 Wanton Mee, Bangkok

Bangkok . 2013 . Jul 28

This post is part of our Bangkok 3 days 2 nights short weekend trip itinerary. Do check out the full itinerary and our reviews here.

When we were researching on places to eat in Bangkok, SabX2 Wanton Mee is one eatery that keep appearing in many blog posts freqently besides the famous Somboon Seafood. Since the eatery is located opposite Platinum Mall and just next to Pratunam Market, we decided to visit SabX2 Wanton Mee for breakfast on the second day of our Bangkok trip.

When you are across the road from Platinum Mall, look out for the small lanes for Soi Petchburi 19. You should be able to see the eatery when you turn and walk into the lane.

This photo is taken while we were looking out from Soi Petchburi 19. As you can see, the stall is located in the same lane as Shibuya 19 Shopping Mall. If you are looking for a hotel which is near the Platinum Mall, Pratunam Market and the SabX2 Waton Mee, you might want to consider Glow Pratunam Hotel which is just above the Shibuya shopping mall with its lobby on the 7th floor.

Empty bowls stacked out at the food preparation corner. We were wondering how many bowls this wanton mee eatery actually sell every day.. We would guess that it must be quite a lot as the eatery closes quite early at 4pm.

Besides its famous wanton mee, the stall also sells braised pork, which was recommended by several blogs. We didn't try that when we were there, but you might want to order a plate to share especially if you are in a big group.

Photo taken while waiting in the queue outside the stall for a table. The eatery is already full although we arrive relatively early around 9 plus in the morning.

Finally, we are ushered into the eatery and we were definitely glad that the place is air-conditioned, a welcoming escape from the bangkok heat! It seems that there were many Singaporeans in the eatery (easily identified through their Singlish), probably due to the numerous recommendations from blogs.

The menu is simple and pasted on the wall beside our table. There is only wanton mee (either soup or dry) and the braised pork rice. For drinks, it seems that only chysanthemum juice is available, although we do see cokes and other soft drinks on some of the tables. We ordered a glass of Chysanthemum Juice (THB $30 = SGD $1.20) to share.

Condiments to accompany the wanton mee.

Dried Wanton Mee (THB $40 = SGD $1.60). The portion is very small, probably half of what is typically served in Singapore. For all the hype and the queue, we were slightly disappointed. We had eaten probably similar or better quality wanton mee in Singapore.

Soup Wanton Mee (THB $40 = SGD $1.60). The soup was slightly on the oily side but the wanton were fresh and the noodles were very springly and QQ.

Total cost of the meal worked out to be THB $110 (SGD $4.45) for 2 persons, which was a relatively cheap way to start your day! :)

How to get there:

On the road opposite Platinum Mall, walk towards Shibuya 19 Mall and McDonald's (against the traffic flow).  When you see McDonald's, turn right into Soi 19.  You should see the eatery somewhere in the middle of the lane on the right hand side.
