Iceland . 2013 . Nov 23 - Dec 3

Iceland – a large island isolated from the rest of Europe depend largely on imports to sustain it’s population.  Nevertheless, the country does make use of its excellent geology and the innate creativity of their people to produce items that are unique to Iceland.  Here are the top products to purchase when visiting this remarkable country.

1. Icelandic Wool Products

Icelandic wool is reputed for its warmth, lightness and insulation abilities and are able to keep you warm even when wet (think of how all those Icelandic sheeps survive in the harsh outdoors during winter). So wool products such as gloves, caps, scarves, socks and other accessories are guaranteed to keep you warm in the harsh winter.  The one item that you will find only in Iceland is the Icelandic wool sweaters, also known fondly as Lopapeysa locally.

These sweaters are hand-knitted using 100% pure Icelandic wool and the name of the knitter usually comes as a tag to the sweater.  Almost every Icelander we see owns one of these woollen sweaters.  Grab one when in Iceland.  You won’t be able to find these traditional Icelandic patterns in other parts of the world.  Prices are not cheap – each sweater usually cost USD200 and above.  Some brands to consider are Icewear, Nordic Store and Alafoss.

2. Winter Wear

Lightweight, 100% waterproof and windproof material, these winter wear are well-made, sturdy and most importantly fashionable.  66°North and Cintamani are all Icelandic brands.

3. Icelandic Chocolates

Just like their coffees and Swiss Mochas, Icelandic chocolates are a superior breed.

4. Blue Lagoon Products

Located just 15 mins from Keflavík International airport and 45 mins away from the city centre, the Blue Lagoon is the must-go destination in Iceland.  This outdoor geothermal pool with milky blue waters sits in the middle of a lava field and has a surreal and ethereal feel to it.  It is little wonder that the Blue Lagoon is consistently ranked as one of the top in the world.  Besides letting the mineral rich waters in the lagoon work wonders for your skin, why not consider bringing some of the benefits home with you.  The Blue Lagoon has a suite of excellent skin care products that contains the same active ingredients and benefits of the waters of the Blue Lagoon.  Most notable are the silica mud mask and algae mask.  You can also get these products from their online shop.

5. Icelandic Jewellery and Crafts

Iceland has a large number of craft shops selling products made from natural materials such as rocks, stones and volcanic ashes. For cheap and creative art and craft materials and souvenirs, pay a visit to Tiger Stores along Reykjavík's Shopping Street.

Or purchase your own vial of volcanic ash or rocks at selected stores.  These ashes come labelled with the name of the volcano they erupted from and the year of eruption.

Top Tip of the day:
For any single purchase above ISK4000, tourists are entitled to 15% VAT refund.  Just get the signed receipt and the tax refund form from the cashier and make the claim at the departure lounge at the airport.

Hanoi . 2013 . Aug 7 - 13

This post is part of our Hanoi 7 days 6 nights Trip Itinerary and Report. Do check out the full itinerary and our reviews here.

1.    Take a relaxing cruise at Halong Bay

Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, Halong Bay should be at the top of your itinerary.  If you are hard-pressed for time, take a day trip to Halong Bay.  We will, however, recommend that you spend at least a night on a junk ship cruising around the bay, as the drive from Hanoi to Halong Bay will already take 3-4 hours one way.  Those with more time to spare can consider a 2 night cruise which brings you further to Lan Ha Bay and Cat Ba Island where there are clearer waters and less ships cruising around.

2.    Enjoy a Relaxing Spa

The Spas in Hanoi, Vietnam are actually very good value for money.  Cheaper than those in Thailand, Vietnamese spas offer a professional experience at an affordable price. Choose from a variety of Indian, Thai or Vietnamese body message, or have a foot message.  They are guaranteed to loosen those tight muscles and gear you for more intensive walking around Hanoi.  For the best spa experience, head to SF Spa located at 30 Cửa Đông.

3.    Try Vietnamese Cuisine

Vietnamese cuisine have a life and spirit of their own.  Although Vietnamese fare is widely available in other countries, it is always best to check out the original version in its country of origin. Read up on our recommendations for the top cuisines to try in Hanoi and visit the Gourmet Corner Restaurant for a wonderful dining experience.

4.    Watch a Water Puppet Show

If you have an hour to spare and would like to have a brief reprieve from the hot Hanoi summer, head to the Tranglong Water Puppet Theatre. Traditional puppet theatre uses a water stage for their puppets which glides on the water, while actors control the puppets discreetly behind a screen.

5.    Enjoy a Cyclo Ride through Hanoi

Cyclos are an interesting way to take in the city.   They may be a lot slower than the taxis and motorcycles whizzing around the city, but is an excellent way to explore and observe the city sights at a leisurely pace. Negotiate a price of about 100,000 VND per hour and have the exact change on hand.  Note that each cyclo can sit 2 passengers (as long as you fit into the seat), but do tip the driver afterwards for their extra effort in peddling an extra weight around.

6.    Stroll through the Old Quarters and Night Markets

What better way to while away the afternoon and evenings than browsing through the endless streets of the Old Quarters.  Watch the chaotic traffic at the veranda of the City View Café or test your haggling skills at the night markets of Hanoi.

7.    Visit the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum

Join the queue and file by the embalmed body of Vietnam’s revered leader Ho Chi Minh also fondly known as Uncle Ho in Vietnam.  Although the embalming was against the late leader’s wishes, large numbers of domestic and international tourists are attracted to pay their respects to him.  Expect long queues especially on weekends.

Note: Photography is not allowed in the building and wear appropriate clothing as a sign of respect.

8.    Visit the Temple of Literature

Have a look at Vietnam’s first university – now known as the Temple of Literature when you are in Hanoi.  Built to honour Confucius in the 11th century, the Temple of Literature no longer serves as a university, but yet continues to attract students to its premises to pray for good grades.

9.    Take a trip to Sapa

Located 350km away from Hanoi, Sapa is home to many ethnic minorities.  Be enchanted by the padi fields, waterfalls and mountain ranges.  Described as a off-the-beaten path destination in Vietnam, Sapa is connected to Hanoi by train and you could take an overnight train to save some accommodation cost.

10 Things to buy in Hanoi, Vietnam

Hanoi . 2013 . Aug 7 - 13

This post is part of our Hanoi 7 days 6 nights Trip Itinerary and Report. Do check out the full itinerary and our reviews here.

When it comes to shopping, there is no lack of choices in Hanoi for you.  This vibrant city offers a large selection of ethnic minority souvenirs, hand-made crafts and soft silks.  You’ll just need to walk through the 36 streets of the Old Quarters to experience the shopping culture of Hanoi.  We bring to you, the top 10 items to buy at Hanoi.  And before you hit the streets, have a look at our shopping tips.

1.    Vietnamese Silk

Vietnamese silk is available all over the Old Quarters, but mostly concentrated at Hang Gai (silk street).  However, unless you are an expert, it will be difficult to differentiate between the fakes and the real deal.
Tip: The locals recommend bringing along a lighter – 100 percent silk will burn while acrylic will just melt, giving off the smell of burning plastics.
Stick to the more established shops if you are keen to buy in large quantities. For eg, Khai Silk located at 96 Hang Gai is an established shop which is popular with tourists.  Ha Dong Silk at 102 Hang Gai Street and Tan My at 66 Hang Gai are also worth visiting. However, you do pay for the quality as prices are higher than the other shops.

If you want to buy good quality silk at cheap prices, a Vietnamese friend recommends going to Van Phuc Silk Village.  It is not a colourful, bustling village for tourists, but really just a place where silk clothing are weaved and sold at good prices.

2.    Embroidery

In the olden days, young ladies in wealthy Chinese families must learn embroidery, for it is considered a refined art.  Today, much of this skill is lost, but it still lives on in the cities of Vietnam.  Embroidered fabrics are seen commonly at the Old Quarters and at Dong Xuan market.  These are usually the coarsely made ones but they are nevertheless still impressive.  The finer embroidery sold at galleries uses premium silk threads and skilled embroiders and can cost up to a few hundred US dollars for a small piece of work.  You will marvel at how life-like these embroidered artwork are.

3.    Lacquer Ware

Lacquer ware is one of those items that I would strongly recommend that you buy in Vietnam.  They are available at department stores in Singapore, but they come at exorbitant prices.  Lacquer ware are well made in Hanoi, and they have even more and better designs than what is available over here.  They come in all forms – plates and dishes, coasters, wine holders, jewellery boxes etc.  Although bulky, they are pretty lightweight and easy to carry back home.  It makes for a great gift or as decorative pieces for a modern home.

4.    Lacquer Paintings

You will be impressed by the modern and exquisite artwork on lacquer. Lacquer paintings are created by coating the wood with layers of resin, each dried and sanded before the next coating is added.  They come in various sizes and designs and make a wonderful gift for a loved one.

5.    Canvas Paintings

It came as a surprise to us to see good oil paintings along any street in Hanoi.  While the lacquer paintings are impressive, the country also has a rich tradition of canvas painting.

Other than the localized flavours of conical hats and padi fields, there are also a great variety of westernized paintings, many of these are imitations.  If something catches your fancy, haggle hard for it.  We have seen foreigners buying paintings for the price they successfully bargain for.
Tip: Head to the corner of Hang Be and Hang Bac to get good imitation copies of paintings.

6.    Handicraft

Hand knitted pouches, wristlets, pencil cases, wood carvings, traditional masks and other memorabilia can be found all over the Old Quarters and are best suited as souvenirs for your friends. Many of these shops are set up near the Hoan Kiem Lake and the water puppet theatre.

7.    Clothes

Hanoi has a great selection of boutiques that carries quality and fashionable products.   However, prices are not as cheap as Bangkok.  A simple dress off the rack cost me about SGD25.  Those at the higher end boutiques can range from about SGD40-100.

8.    Tailored Garments

If you catch anything of your fancy on the rack and it does not fit you, try asking the shopkeeper if they can tailor one of your size for you.  It should come at no extra charge.  Alternatively, bring cut-outs from magazines of fashion that you like and get them to tailor make it for you.  If you are really keen on custom making, do it on your first day at Hanoi to allow time for fitting and adjustments.
Tip: Turn clothes inside out to check the quality of work along the seams.  As good as it looks on the outside, it must also be quality work on the inside.

9.    Imitation Backpacks and Bags

A friend came back from Hanoi raving about the authentic North Face and Crumpler bags sold all around the Old Quarters.   Needless to say, she stuffed her luggage full of these purchases.   I did not have the heart to tell her yet that those backpacks she bought were all fakes.  Vietnam may be the place of manufacture for these brand names, but what is sold at the Old Quarters of Hanoi are mainly poorly made imitations of the real thing.  I’ve ploughed through almost every shop at the Old Quarters and have yet to come across an authentic North Face product.
Tip: Fakes are easy to tell – just have a look at their zippers (authentic ones have good and sturdy zippers that slide across smoothly), the shoulder pads (authentic ones have luxurious paddings while fake ones have none at all), the back padding (again, authentic ones have sturdy backings and generous amounts of cushion) and the material used (sturdy vs cheap polyester).
Nevertheless, if buying an authentic backpack is not at the top of your list, and you can get by with just any bag, then Hanoi is actually a very good place to get them.  A medium sized backpack with a North Face logo can cost as low as USD10 before haggling.   Shops selling bags are mainly clustered around the Hoan Kiem Lake and the water puppet theatre.

10. Ceramics

Hanoi is an excellent to stock up on household items, including ceramic and porcelain home pieces.  While they may not be the best in terms of quality, they can easily be had at affordable prices.  Look out for the simple and classic tea sets.
