Gold Coast . 2012 . Aug 07-13

Every Wednesday and Friday evening, the foreshores of Surfers Paradise comes alive with makeshift market stalls selling a great variety of local produce, souvenirs, jewellery, handicraft, artistic and hand-made items, and the music of buskers.  There is even a magician performing at one of the stalls!

 Decorative Pieces for the Home...

An old coin gets pressed and sculpted into a pendant!

Beautiful handmade table runners and tissue box covers.

Recycled glass bottles are flattened and made into clocks.  Can you spot the Vegemite and Bundaberg root beer bottles from this picture?

This is my favourite stall with gorgeous paintings for the home.

Get a sketch or drawing done for a fee.

Body warmers made into adorable owls.

Get a python wrapped around your neck and live to tell the tale and take a picture.  Only for the brave hearted.

With a great variety of merchandize, it is little wonder that the promenade is vibrant and bustling with people.   There is bound to be something for everyone here.

Sea World Gold Coast - Its Show Time!

Gold Coast . 2012 . Aug 07-13

Following Part 1 of our review on Sea World Gold Coast, we will now review the shows and the transport options in the park resort.

We’ve listed the shows available at Sea World, but for more details on the daily show times, refer to the daily programme leaflet given out at the entrance of Sea World.  Most of the shows have 2 timings per day, except for the SpongeBob Parade Pants, which takes place only once per day
Shows at Sea World
  • SpongeBob ParadePants
  • Fish Detectives Sea Lion Show
  • Imagine Dolphin Show
  • Jet Stunt Extreme
  • Dora’s Best Friends Adventure Show
  • SpongeBob 3D
  • Ray Reef – Ray Feeding Session
  • Penguin Point – Penguin Feeding Session

Penguin Point

Join the rangers at Penguin point where the fairy penguins live at for a feeding session.

Imagine Dolphin Show

This is held at Dolphin Cove, located right at the far end of the resort.  Gates to the theatre opens 30 mins before show time, so turn up early if you want a good view.

Dolphins swim up to the water surface and really close to the edge of the pool to have a peek at its audience before the show.

Some luckier members of the audience get a chance to interact with the dolphins during the show.

Fish Detective Sea Lion show

Sea Lions mascarade as crime fighting detectives in this adventure.  Watch them perform tricks and have a good laugh.

Sky High Skyway

The Sky High Skyway is hardly a good tool to get around the theme park, but it is still a must-try as it gives you an aerial view of the park!  There are only 2 stops for the Skyway – one near the entrance of the theme park, and another at the 3D theatre where the Spongebob 3D is screened.

Sea World Monorail

There are only 3 stations for the Monorail – one near the Penguin Encounter, one at Shark Bay and the last at the Sea World Resort.
Tip: If you are rushing for a show or pressed for time, it may be a better idea to walk, for these trains come at a frequency of only once every 30 mins!

Beautiful picture of the bay where the Whale Watching cruises depart taken from the Monorail Station.

Sea World Gold Coast – An Amazing Day of Fun with Marine Animals

Gold Coast . 2012 . Aug 07-13

Besides its beautiful stretches of unspoiled beaches, Gold Coast is also famous for its theme parks.  The main draw amongst the slew of theme parks available was Sea World Gold Coast, for how could we miss the adorable dolphins, the playful seals, the majesty of the penguins and the menacing sharks!

Download a map of Sea World Gold Coast here.

Penguin Encounter

This attraction is conveniently located just next to the entrance of Sea World and judging from the crowd here, it is a favourite with visitors!

The ambience at the Penguin Encounter is amazing.  Visitors are treated to a mock-up of the living conditions of the penguins, complete with the sounds they make and the sounds of the Antarctic winds.  Here resides two main types of penguins, the agile Gentoo penguins and the King Penguins, which is the second largest penguin in the world after the Emperor Penguins.

There is a large pool which houses the Gentoo penguins where you can watch the Gentoo penguins ‘fly’ in the water!

Proceed to the upper level where the King Penguins dwells in its exhibit of icy rock formation and watch them march in file from one end to the other! Watch the surface of the pool at the background where the Gentoo Penguins swim in.  Sometimes, they come up to the surface for some fun with the King Penguins!

Dinosaur Discovery Centre

A small but excellent display of dinosaurs exhibits here.

Seabird Rehabilitation Aviary

Just down the road from the Penguin Encounter is a nesting colony of Australian Pelicans. This particular species of Pelicans nests on the ground.  You probably could smell them from a distance – they really stink!!   Close up to them, these birds look huge and intimidating with an unblinking stare!

Dolphin Nursery Pool

More than 35% of the dolphins that we see at Sea World Gold Coast are born in captivity.  Many of the third generation dolphins live at Sea World with their parents and grandparents.  The Nursery Pool is where the mothers live with their new calfs.  There are barricades around the nursery so visitors are not allowed to go near and touch them, but we are contented enough to watch them from a distance.  This particular playful calf swam closer to the shore for a photo opportunity.

Shark Bay

As the name suggests, this is the place where sharks roam.  There are ample opportunities for visitors to see and interact with sharks here.

There’s a tropical reef snorkelling lagoon where you get to swim among reefs and tropical fishes, stingrays and sharks.

The surface level allows you to see the swimming tropical fishes, sharks and stingrays through the crystal clear waters.

The most interesting activity here must be the shark encounter, where divers get to swim in a protected tank in a bay of sharks and feed them!  This is the tank as seen from the water surface

Visitors can proceed to an underground gallery and find themselves face to face with bull sharks! See the bottom of the tank here where the divers feed the sharks from.

Touch Pool @ Shark Bay

This must be the only place where urbanites gets the chance to touch marine life forms such as star fishes, sea cucumbers and sea urchins.

These star fishes, also known as sea stars feel tough and scaly to the touch.

The sea cucumber which is also a delicacy in the Chinese community.

We hope that you have enjoyed Part 1 of our review of Sea World Gold Coast. Do check out our next article where we will be reviewing the shows and the transport options within Sea World.

Hotel Review: Vibe Hotel Gold Coast

Gold Coast . 2012 . Aug 07-13

We did our research online and shortlisted a few hotels in Surfer’s Paradise based on past reviews, cost and location.  It caught our eye that Vibe Hotel was newly refurbished and on further study, we found that they occupy an excellent location.   We gave it a try and were pleasantly surprised when the hotel exceeds all our expectations.   We had thoroughly enjoyed our short stay at Vibe Hotel and would like to share with you our experience.

The Location

Situated next to Public Bus Stops

The location of Vibe Hotel is superb.   It is situated right next to the bus stop where public buses bring you to Sea World, Movie World, Warner Bros, and Wild n Wet.  This same bus stop is also where Bus 702 from the Airport stops at Surfers Paradise and is perfect for travellers who need to take public transport from the Airport.

Near to Shopping and Dining Outlets

Vibe Hotel is located opposite the Chevron Renaissance village, just a block from Cavill Avenue, the heart of the Surfers Paradise shopping district.  There is plenty of dining options here, ranging from coffee houses, cafes to restaurants.  We found a great range of Asian fare here as well – Japanese, Chinese, Thai, and Korean, even a Taiwanese bubble tea shop!  Most importantly, there is a Woolworth Supermarket conveniently located at Circle on Cavill right across the street, and this serves us well for our daily needs and supplies.

Near to the Golden Beach

It’s a leisurely walk of about 10 minutes to the beach, and you’ll pass by some shops and cafes along the way.

Next to the Nerang River

Besides getting the beautiful scenery of the Nerang river on a everyday-basis, this is also the boarding area for some of the river cruises.  The river is bordered by boardwalks and flanked by Appel Park.

Whales in Paradise, the only whale watching operator which departs at Surfers Paradise operates right behind the hotel, and this fact is especially appealing to yours truly, who got severely seasick during the whale watching cruise and had to get back to the hotel quickly to rest.  For those who likes a bit of Adrenaline, JetBoar Xtreme also operates right behind the hotel.

The Service

As our flight on Scoot landed at Gold Coast at 7:50am, we got to our hotel fairly early at around 9am.  Check in is from 2pm onwards and we had fully anticipated leaving our luggage at the reception as it was still way too early for check-in.  Imagine our surprise when the hotel told us our room was ready and that they are giving us a free upgrade from a Deluxe View King Room to a bigger and higher floor room!

Throughout our short stay, we found the staff to be friendly and helpful.  Room service was always prompt and consumables were quickly replenished every day.

The Room

The hotel room lives up to all its expectations.   The room is spacious and comfortable, aesthetically pleasing and most of its furnishings are new.  There is complimentary coffee and tea and a fridge and mini bar provided.   Its king sized bed is clean and comfortable.  Most amazingly, although the hotel is located in the middle of the bustling night life of Gold Coast and facing the main room, our room was quiet and we had a good rest at night.

We love the layout of the room, and especially so for the bathroom area.  The bathtub, W.C and wash basin are located on the right with a sliding door for privacy, the wardrobe is on the left, and there is an extra wash basin and vanity top in the middle.   This is a very good design, especially for couples staying in a room, where one can do a quick wash-up and get dressed even if the bath room is occupied.

The cleanliness of its bathroom is commendable.  It is squeaky clean with no sign of dampness or mouldiness.  In fact, it is so clean that it shines!  For travellers like us who are particular about bathroom hygiene, this is a major plus point!

The hotel provides you with the basic soap, shampoo, conditioner and sanitary kit.  But as with most Australian hotels, there are no disposable toothbrush and toothpaste provided, so do remember to bring your own.

The Balcony

Our favourite area of the room is its balcony.  With a room on the 19th storey, we get a view of the Pacific Ocean in front of us.

For early risers, you can watch sunrise at the privacy of your balcony.

During the day, the balcony doubles up as a drying area for our clothes, as there is substantial sunlight filtering in.  In the evening, enjoy the cool evening breeze and watch the sun set over the picturesque Nerang river behind you!

Our recommendation: Buy some piping hot roast chicken, beer, drinks and snacks from the nearby Woolworths and have your take-away dinner at the comfort of the balcony!

The Common Areas and Facilities

Guests will feel welcomed by the cozy reception area.  There are vending machines for snacks, ice-cream and cold drinks, racks for tour brochures and a touch-screen machine that lists the restaurants and places of interest nearby.  We even printed free vouchers for discounts at Hard Rock CafĂ© Surfers Paradise and at Baskin Robbins!!

The hotel provides deck chairs, a small pool and a gym at the ground floor.   Though small, we saw that it is not very heavily utilised.  The scenic Nerang river is just behind the pool (you can actually see the Whales in Paradise cataramen parked behind in the photo).

And again, the infamous sunset over the Nerang river which you can view while chilling out at the pool in the evening.

Verdict:

This is a hotel with excellent location, excellent services and clean and beautiful rooms and facilities at an affordable price.  We highly recommend this to anyone who intends to stay at Surfers Paradise.

Our 5 nights' stay at Vibe Hotel cost AUD$510 inclusive of taxes for 3 weekdays and 2 weekends without breakfast. Check here for the cheapest rates available for your travel.
