Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol & Jooi Hooi Café

Penang . 2013 . Jan 17 - 20

This post is a continuation of our previous post on Kek Lok Si (极乐寺) - "Temple of Supreme Bliss". You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

Jooi Hooi Café was one of those eating places recommended by a a friend of ours who grew up in Penang.  According to him, the char kway teow (fried broad noodles) and penang laksa (aka assam laksa) here is popular and well liked by locals.

Don’t be misled by the name of Jooi Hooi Café.  It is actually not a café, but rather a non-airconditioned coffeeshop!

This was not the first time we came to Jooi Hooi Café.  Back in May 2011, we came by here searching for the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol when we were had a stopover at Penang on board our Royal Carribbean cruise.

The Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol is a makeshift stall that operates at a lane outside the Jooi Hooi Café.  As with our last visit, this famous Chendol seller is still enjoying brisk buisness.

The usual sight of hordes of people gathering around the stall slurping the ice-cool chendol under the hot sun.  The chendol is certainly refreshing, but I wonder if the fact that it takes a lot of walking under the hot sun to get here adds to the crave for some ice cold stuff.

When we were here in May 2011, we were much attracted to the aroma of char kway teow at a stall operating within Jooi Hooi Café.  So it was great that we had another chance to come back here to savor this.

We actually prefer the char quay teow from Jooi Hooi café over the ones at Gurney Drive Hawker Centre.   But again, this is a matter of personal preference.

The penang assam laksa stall is located at the rear end of the coffeeshop, and surprise, the laksa was cooked by an Indian, and not a local chinese as we thought.   There are two sizes, but get the larger sized one because it is only 50 cents more expensive.

This is one of the best penang laksa we’ve ever had.  The level of sourness and spiciness is just right.  The noodles are also very much smoother than what we have in Singapore.  If there were any regrets, it was that our stomachs were too full to take another bowl of it.

Since we were already here, we might as well have another serving of the famous chendol from the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol.  Because the stall is not operating within the coffeeshop, we had to pay the coffeeshop a surcharge of 50 cents for having it in the coffeeshop. If you are ok with standing with the crowd under the hot sun or you are in a rush, you may want to save the 50 cents and enjoy the unique atmosphere of eating with the crowd! :)

Is it our imagination, but somehow, it seems that the chendol used to be better back in 2011.  Nevertheless, it is still of a good standard and deserves a try.

If you are in the area, do remember to visit the Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol & Jooi Hooi Café for a taste of great local food!
