Restaurant Review - Dragon-i 笼的传人拉面小笼包 (Gurney Plaza)

Penang . 2013 . Jan 17 - 20

This post is a continuation of our previous post on Penang Road Famous Teochew Chendol & Jooi Hooi Café. You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

After a satisfying late lunch at Jooi Hooi Cafe, it was time to go back to G Hotel to take a short rest before our trip to Batu Ferringhi Night Market at night. Tired from our morning exhaustions to Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si, we decided to take a cab back to G Hotel. This would save us the hassle of taking the free CAT bus from Jooi Hooi Cafe to Komtar before changing to Rapid Penang Bus #304 to Gurney Drive.

After a short rest at the hotel, it was soon time for dinner. After eating at Gurney Drive Hawker Centre the previous day, we decided to pamper ourselves tonight and have a good meal at Gurney Plaza.

We were deciding between Chicago Ribs and Dragon-I, both at Gurney Plaza and chose Dragon-I in the end as we want to try Penang chinese food again after our pleasant meal at Rou Gu Cha King. It was not the first time we had dine at a Dragon-I resturant. The first time was at 1 Utama Shopping Mall during our trip to Petaling Jaya a few years back to visit some relatives in Malaysia.

There are 2 seating areas, limited tables in the resturant near their kitchen and the seating area outside the resturant.

Menu at Dragon-I. Super Red...

Bowl of Steam Peanuts. Typical starters / appetizers at Chinese Restaurants.

Our order. 4 main items + 1 bowl of steamed white rice.

Shanghainese Steamed Meat Dumplings (上海小笼包), MYR $9.80.  Not too bad, but we thought the ones at Imperial Treasures Restaurant and Crystal Jade Restaurants back in Singapore were better.

Steamed Piggy Bun with Red Bean Paste (猪仔豆沙包), MYR $9.00. We ordered it as we found it quite cute. Still ok, but not too much red bean filling.

Deep Fried Wantan (锦卤炸云吞), MYR $10.00. This wasn't as nice, guess that's why it wasn't in the chef specialites list.. :)

Crispy Duck, Half (香酥脆皮鸭, 半只), MYR $35.00. This was supposed to be our main dish. Overall, it was quite ok, but still not comparable to the one that we had at Imperial Treasure Super Peking Duck in Paragon Mall Singapore. Of course, the price is much cheaper though..

Total cost of meal worked out to be MYR $82.70 or SGD $33.10 (including taxes). A similar meal would probably have cost us at least SGD $50 in Singapore. Overall, we felt the food was reasonably ok but probably not as good as some of the meals we had at Crystal Jade / Imperial Treasure restaurants back in Singapore.

Dragon-I has expanded its footprints into the region and its sister brand Canton-I has outlets at Ion Orchard and Compass Point shopping malls in Singapore. So before you go to Malaysia, you might want to try the outlets in Singapore to see if it is to your liking! :)
