Pratunam Area Shopping (Pratunam Market + Krungthong Plaza + Shibuya 19 Mall), Bangkok

Bangkok . 2013 . Jul 28

This post is part of our Bangkok 3 days 2 nights short weekend trip itinerary. Do check out the full itinerary and our reviews here.

If you happen to be going to Platinum Mall, why not stop over at the Pratunam Market, a wholesale market located just right across the street from Platinum Mall.  It is alleged that some items at Pratunum Market are sold at an even cheaper price than Platinum Mall!  In fact, many of the shops at Platinum Mall originated from Pratunam Market.  And while you are at Pratunam Market, remember to make a pit stop at the famous SabX2 Wanton Mee store at Street 19.

View of Platinum Mall taken from Pratunam Market. You can cross the overhead bridge over to Pratunam Market from Platinum Mall.

The busy alleyway of Pratunum Market.  We find ourselves having to multi-task here – one eye to look out for vehicles on the street, another eye on potential buys, and yet having to haggle for a good price at the same time!

Pratunam Market is predominately an open-air market, and is a shopping experience in itself.  Along the narrow streets, are some smallish (and thankfully air-conditioned) shopping centres, offering a good respite from the heat and pollution of the streets.  We found ourselves some pretty good deals at some of these shopping malls, including Shibuya 19 Mall and Krungthong Plaza.

First up, Krungthong Plaza, another mall with a food court on the top of the shopping mall.

Make sure you have a look at T-Shirts 4 Picasso! The entire shop is dedicated to selling couple T-Shirts with cute messaging.  It comes in a reusable container and a nice wooden panel as an illustration of what the T-Shirts would look like.  If you missed it, not to worry!  T-Shirts 4 Picasso have plenty more outlets in Platinum Mall.

It is generally well-known that ladies undergarments are sold cheaply at Bangkok – about SGD20 plus each for an authentic Wacoal or Triump bra at up-market shopping malls.  We found a local brand No's Bra at Krungthong Plaza selling silky seamless underwear at an unbelievable price of 2 for THB $100 (=SGD $4)!

Mix, One of the many clothing stores at Krungthong Plaza where each dress is sold for 250THB (=SGD10).  As usual, because this is a wholesale market, trying on of clothes is not allowed, and fortunately for me, they fit perfectly when I returned to the hotel (I’am an Asian size S).  We found several other outlets of the same shop selling the same merchandise at Platinum Mall.  This is going to become one of my fave stores as their quality and designs are good!

More clothes stores in Krungthong Plaza. No wonder they say that Bangkok is a shopper's paradise.

Next, we move to Shibuya 19 Mall. We found a store note-worthy for its great variety of beautiful hand-made bags. At THB $299 (SGD $12) each, it's quite a steal considering the quality of the bags.

Another clothing store selling Korean-style tops at THD $110 (SGD $4.40) each.  Can you believe it?!

Overall, we had a great morning shopping and walking around the Pratunam Market area after our breakfast at SabX2 Wanton Mee eatery. Stay tuned as we bring you our shopping haul at Platinum Mall in our next article.
