This post is a continuation of our previous post on Relaxing Breakfast @ Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (G Hotel). You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

We had great getaway trip at Langkawi few years back and had a great stay at Westin Langkawi Resort & Spa. We had a booked a 4D3N package stay which included daily buffet breakfasts and one night of buffet dinner. It was one of the best buffets that we had! When we heard that G Hotel Penang offer High Tea Buffets @ MYR$45++ on Saturdays, we decided to give it a try and hope that it is as good as the buffets at the Westin Langkawi Resort @ Spa.

Nice environment for a relaxing afternoon High Tea buffet. Amongst the greenery surrounding the hotel.

You can also choose to face Gurney Plaza if you want some inspirations on what to shop later.. :)

Or how about a more cozy setting...

 Getting Ready for the Buffet...

Neat Buffet set-up. We were amongst the first ones to enter the dining area for the buffet and had the opportunity to take some photos without the crowd.

So what's inside the containers? Let's find out...

Golden Bags, Popiahs, Chicken Stick and Tarts.

Penang Fruit Rojak.

Assorted Malay Kuehs. Just nice for an afternoon indulgence.

Small slices of cakes. Various flavours to choose from.

Bread Selection.

Dried Fruits Preserve.

Fresh Cut Fruits.

Pangat Pisang.

Salad Making Station. You may want to start with this as an appetizer.

Noodle Station. For some prawn noodles.

Dim Sum Station. Its just next to the Noodles Station.

Pink Steamed Buns. We didn't take individual photos of them and have to use this one..

Green coloured Soup. We forgot the ingredients though...

Cold Cuts Station. We didn't take any of these though...

Live Preparation Station. You can request the hotel staff to prepare Satays and Kebabs here.

Keropoks. Crackers.

Gummies. This is the first time we see these as part of a buffet...

Beverages are part of the buffet as well. Coffee and English Tea are included in the buffet too, but you would need to inform the waiter that you would like to have a cup as they don't go round serving them automatically.

How about some Teh Tarik too?

Baskin Robbins Ice Cream. What a sweet way to end the meal..

Overall, the G Hotel High Tea Buffet was quite sumptuous, considering the price that we paid (MYR $45++). So if you are staying at G Hotel Penang, do try out their High Tea Buffet! They also serve a Family Brunch every Sunday at MYR $78++ besides a theme dinner every night ranging from Seafood, BBQ, Malaysia Local Food, Japanese and Surf & Turf.

Tip: If you own a HSBC credit card, there's a 15% discount!

G Hotel Penang High Tea Buffet
Every Saturday (2.30pm - 5pm) MYR $45++

Penang . 2013 . Jan 17 - 20

This post is a continuation of our previous post on Batu Ferringhi Night Market Review. You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

After an eventful day where we visited Penang Hill & Monkey Cup Eco-Garden, Kek Lok Si Temple (极乐寺) and Batu Ferringhi Night Market, we decided to have a more relaxing Day 3 at Penang.

The plan for the day goes like this:
  • Enjoy a relaxing breakfast @ The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf ( G Hotel)
  • Catch a late morning movie @ Golden Screen Cinema (Gurney Plaza)
  • Try the afternoon tea buffet @ G Hotel
  • Shop in the air-conditioned Gurney Plaza
  • Pack take-away dinner from Gurney Drive Hawker Centre
No more visits of tourist attractions for Day 3...the plan looks more like a typical staycation holiday that you might have in Singapore, abeit at a much cheaper price and lesser crowd.. :)

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (G Hotel)

The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf (more commonly called "Coffee Bean") is an American coffee chain, with its headquarters in Los Angeles, California. The first outlet opened in September 1963 and has over 900 locations in 23 countries, including Australia, Brunei, Cambodia, China, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Israel, South Korea, Kuwait, Lebanon, Malaysia, Mexico, Mongolia, Philippines, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates and Vietnam.

We had preferred The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf over Starbucks in Singapore and were glad to know that there is an outlet just at the lower floor of G Hotel facade. We had tried their breakfast once in Singapore and were pleased with their selections, thus the decision to have a relaxing breakfast on the 3rd day of our Penang Trip.

We ordered 2 breakfast sets - Pancake Platter Set (MYR $17.50) and Eggs Benedict Set (MYR $16.80). Both sets come with a choice of either French Roast coffee or Ceylon Tea.

Pancake Platter Set.  Not too bad. It comes with scrambled eggs and 2 sausages.

Eggs Benedict Set. Think the one that we had at The Coffee Club @ Gold Coast was better. But this one is still ok.

We chose a cup of French Roast coffee and a cup of Ceylon Tea that comes with the two sets.

Overall, the bill worked out to be MYR $36.35 (inclusive of 6% taxes), which is around SGD $14.50.

If you are staying at G Hotel when you are at Penang, do drop by The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf for a relaxing breakfast! :)

Batu Ferringhi Night Market Review

Penang . 2013 . Jan 17 - 20

This post is a continuation of our previous post on Restaurant Review - Dragon-i 笼的传人拉面小笼包 (Gurney Plaza). You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

Batu Ferringhi is usually the place to go if you want some fun at the beaches of Penang.  At night, the place is transformed into the renowned Batu Ferringhi night market popular with tourists.

Tip: G Hotel provides a free shuttle (van) to Batu Ferrangi night market on Friday and Saturday nights that leave the hotel at 7pm.  But seats are very limited (about 10) and so you do have to reserve a place with them early the day before to confirm your seat.

The journey from G Hotel at Gurney Drive to Batu Ferringhi Night Market takes about 45 minutes, passing through the Tanjung Bungah beach area and then along the winding road of the coastline to Batu Ferringhi beach. The shuttle dropped us at Holiday Inn, right at the heart of the Batu Ferringhi Night Market and will pick us up at the same place at 11pm.

Batu Ferringhi Night Market is packed with restaurants and other smaller eating outlets to cater to the mass of tourists.

The luxurious Lone Pine Hotel at Batu Ferringhi.  It is located along the road where the night market is.  Drop in here to immerse yourself in its peaceful atmosphere if you pass by. The name of the hotel just reminds us of our visit to its namesake, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary in Brisbane! :)

The night market stretches endlessly along the road.  The Batu Ferringhi Night Market is just like the pasar malams in Singapore, albeit at a larger scale.   The stalls sell mostly souvenirs, t-shirts and clothing and cheap (and poor) imitation of branded bags.  The ambience of the night market may be attractive to visitors from foreign lands, but those from southeast asia (like ourselves) where such markets are common would not be impressed.

We were not inclined either to purchase anything for the quality of stuff tend to be poor, but if you do see something that you like, remember to bargain hard with the stall owner for this place is a well-known tourist trap.

Our night time adventure at Batu Ferringhi ended within an hour as nothing here held our interest.   We could not bear waiting another 2 hours for G Hotel’s complimentary return shuttle and so we boarded Rapid Penang Bus 101 for the return trip back to the hotel. It cost us MYR $2.00 each for the one way trip back.

Do note that the bus does not stop directly in front of G Hotel or Gurney Plaza. Do let the driver know that you are getting off at somewhere near G Hotel / Gurney Plaza and he will alert you when the bus stops near the Gurney Drive Hawker Centre. You can then walk back to the hotel from there.

If you are already staying in an accommodation in the Batu Ferringhi area, why not drop by the night market for a short visit.  Otherwise, if you stay far away, you might not want to waste your time travelling.

How to get to Batu Ferringhi Night Market

Public Buses:
Rapid Penang Bus 101, 102.

From G Hotel :
Complementary Shuttle every Friday and Saturday night. Reservations required. First come first served.
