Penang . 2013 . Jan 17 - 20

This post is a continuation of our previous post on Morning Visit to Penang Hill. You may also read the full review of our 4 Days 3 Nights short getaway trip to Penang here.

In our last post, We mention that we had followed the signages towards the Monkey Cup Eco-GardenThe whole walking journey took us 45 mins.

This way to Monkey Cup Eco-Garden. You may want to take a short rest on the benches before the short hike.

View of the Penang Bridge along the way.

Entrance to the Monkey Cup Garden.

The entrance fee is RM10 per adult and not free as we thought!  After making such a tremendous effort to get here, we thought we should just pay up the entrance fee and check out what is in there.  Luckily, we just need to pay an extra RM1 for a buggy ride back!

Maybe it was too early in the day, or perhaphs, the attraction is simply too far away, but when we arrived, we were the only people in the garden.  A Blangadesh tour guide came to greet us, and henceforth started our private tour of the Monkeycup Eco-Garden.

Monkey cups are actually pitcher plants.  In the Monkey Cup Garden,  there are more than a hundred species of money cups originating from different parts of the world and they comes in all shapes and sizes.
They are a genus of carnivorous plants in the monotypic family Nepenthaceae. The genus comprises roughly 140 species, and numerous natural and many cultivated hybrids

That is a lot of Monkey Cups!

There are hanging ones too!

More Monkeycups...

Baby Monkeycups.

A venus fly trap. Another carnivorous plant just like the monkey cups, and a demo of it being fed a live milipede.

Large milipedes.  According to our guide, all the flora and fauna in the garden are collected from Penang Hill.  We’ve never seen milipedes of these size in urban Singapore!

Millipede curled into a ball.

Our brave guide, with the scorpions he caught personally.  The brave-hearted can have a go at holding the scorpions, but not us!

The nest of a Baya Weaver, a species of bird.

Overall, it was an enjoyable experience to visit the Monkeycup Eco-Garden. So if you are at Penang Hill and would like to know more about the Moneycups, you might want to pay a visit here! :)
